Did you ever consider that it isn't Anet fronting that money but their publisher/owner NCSoft, who happen to have quite a few pay by month mmorpgs out, amongst other products that support them. For all we know Anet/GW is a write off for NCSoft.

So long term adding slots will add a negligible amount of storage cost AND bandwidth costs due to new players is offset by the price of Prophecies/Factions.

It is very possible that NCSoft is supplying all the bandwidth as they are already running multiple mmorpgs, so what is another one tossed into the pile?

This is an option for people that want to have all primaries without having to buy a new account. That's all.
It's something that was wholeheartedly asked for by the Guild Wars community. Look in the Factions forum. There's a huge thread about it in there. So please, forgive Anet for listening to their customers and giving them exactly what they asked for.
EDIT: Also, I can't be the only one that's utterly dumbfounded that this is causing as much controversy as it has.

Bet you if when you merged factions with current guild wars and got a total of 8 slots and more storage you'd hardly hear a single peep about being able to buy more character slots.

Hardly, though it might stop them for a while. Then people will start talking about the next campaign, and how they need new character slots because they don't have any free ones left. And how they need more storage because they're packrats and can't fit many new items in their inventories.
Hello campaign 4, and my 16 character slots!!

Wow....... this has stirred up quite the controversy hasn't it. i cant believe this many ppl would complain about something that is so great. Anet has given us nothing but the best, i mean i have never enjoyed a game as much as i have enjoyed gw. i remember when i first hit lvl 20 with my first char i was so friggin happy. then i beat the game and again i was friggin happy. happier then i have ever been apon the completion of a game. and i am sure many others were too. and now some of you are going to complain about something that we the gw players have asked for. wow some ppl out there are either really cheap and dont want to pay someone for something they dont have to give us and make us go buy a new account. or they all just need something to whine about. i cant remember who said it but someone on the gwg staff needs to think about making a whining forum. (thnx to whoever came up with that idea). its the best idea i have ever heard of. well i am done ranting and i hope some ppl here are done complaining about something that the good ppl of anet are giving their customers because the customers asked for it.

Not possible. NC Soft charges for the software. Whether they charge a fee or not, it doesn't qualify. Now if NC Soft gave away Guild Wars it would be a different story.

Well as I see it, if they waited till after factions people would get very p**sed if they didnt merge their accounts then figured out that they couldve bought more character slots.

Nothing changes for me. I have 2 Prophecy accounts. I will have 2 Factions accounts attached to each Prophecy account. God forbid I lose one account for any of the many reasons you can, I'll still have another.
Still, this move just goes to show you that A-Net listens to its customers. Good job.

Will there be a limit on the number of characters you can purchase?

great idea anet!
I think the idea of purchasing extra character slots is awsome, 10 bucks sounds reasonable enough to me also. I am still jonesing over the fact that I dont have to pay a monthly fee, and I am having fun playing witch is the whole point of it all.... having fun.

Hmm no idea if the client actually checks to see if it is running already in memory from a second copy, or if it can differentiate from a second copy. Seeing as I don't have a second copy I can't really check

About time, but I don't understand why they didn't do this months ago to make some cash, as now people will just wait until factions anyway. Of course, they might be needed in future, but still.

This community is really hard to please. SF update was "dull and late", wintersday event was "too short, boring quests too". And those were free updates which ANet had no obligation to do. Sometimes I think people have been spoiled by the active updates and lack of monthly fee. They want it all, they want it now, and they want it for free.
This feature is 100% optional and requested by the community. If you don't want to spend $9.99 on it, fine, play with your current slots. But why fart in ANet's general direction for providing something that a lot of people wanted? Because it's not free? Contrary to popular belief they aren't running a charity here.

All that's on the CD is the client, copy-burned onto every CD they make. There shouldn't be any difference in copies. It's getting a bit late for me, I'll see about running 2 copies without hex editing tomorrow. Just for grins and giggles, I might even borrow my brother's CD and install it to a different directory, if it'll let me install twice.

You're exactly right, and yet people still think ANet owes them freebies. It's rather sad, actually.

What I really don't understand are the people saying that A.net is ripping off returning customers with the merging of accounts.
So for all you necro's in Cantha who can't find a group cause they want a spiteful spirit nec, I'll just laugh at you and join the group in your place.
Chapter 1=

chapter 1 locations
chapter 1 skills
chapter 1 weapon skins
chapter 1 armors
Chapter 2=
chapter 2 story
chapter 2 locations

chapter 2 armors
You know what both games come with? The hard work and dedication from the best VG team on the planet. My hat is off to Arena.net, thank you for this great game and the continued updates.

I think it's great that they are implementing player community ideas. It definately shows that they not only listen, but that the game is becomming "for gamers, by gamers"!
Aside from that, I think $10 for ONE slot is just too much for my tastes. I didn't like that idea when it was tossed around the forums, and I don't like it now. Then again, I never complained about slots, and will more than likely not buy any, but that's just me. It's great that there's an option.
Offering more stuff like this for a nominal fee is a decent idea, as long as it doesn't go overboard. There should never be an extra charge for a blantant advantage over other players. What they've done with the CE, special editions, and preorders are all within the acceptable, non-advantage area. Keep up with that, people like to spend money on perks.

We asked for it, Anet gave it to us. Thanks for listening to your players, Anet! Finally I can move all my chars to one account and stop that time consuming and tiresome moving of items between accounts. Woot!
By the way, I would also like to express my support for the idea to add one more row of storage space for every slot purchased. Maybe you guys could consider that idea...
To the whiners complaining about the price: It's free market. Buy or don't buy , the decision is yours. But stop that stupid whining, thank you! You can safely assume that Anet set that price according to what a significant portion of their target audience is willing to pay (ALL prices are made that way). If you don't need more slots, fine, it's not your problem anyway, then. If you are not willing to pay that price for a slot, that's your decision. I am not willing to pay the price for a Ferrari, but I don't write whine-mails to them, too. I look at that car, I wonder how anyone could ever be willing to shell out that much money for a car, but that's it. Obviously they have enough people paying their prices to keep them in business...
Of course I would have liked to pay only $5 per slot and not $10, too. Of course I would have prefered to have gotten 10 more slots for FREE. Wouldn't we all? Unfortunately it's not the way the economy works, so get over it.
